Referendum B: SGA Officer Eligibility

Vote "yes" or "no":

Do you support the following amendment to the SGA Constitution?  (This proposed amendment has been placed on the ballot by the SGA Senate and Finance Board, and will take effect if approved by a majority of the voters in this election).

Summary:  The proposed amendment would (1) remove the minimum GPA requirement for officers not serving in formal leadership positions, (2) change the requirement that SGA officers not be on "disciplinary probation" to a requirement that officers in formal leadership positions not be "under disciplinary suspension," and (3) change the minimum GPA for the SGA Treasurer from 2.25 to 2.5.

The Details: The first two sentences of Article 5.2 of the SGA Constitution now read, “In order to be eligible to seek and hold SGA offices, an individual must be a UMBC undergraduate, have at least a cumulative 2.25 GPA, maintain at least a 2.25 semester GPA while in office, and not be on academic or disciplinary probation.  For the offices of President, Executive Vice President and Vice President for Student Organizations, an individual must have at least a cumulative 2.5 GPA, 24 total credits, and 12 credits at UMBC to seek or hold office, and maintain at least a 2.5 semester GPA while in office.”  The amendment would change these sentences so they read, “In order to be eligible to seek and hold elected SGA offices, or appointed offices for which a stipend is provided and/or the officer is responsible for supervising other appointed officers, an individual must be a UMBC undergraduate, have at least a cumulative 2.25 GPA, maintain at least a 2.25 semester GPA while in office, and neither be on academic probation nor under disciplinary suspension (whether in effect, imposed for a future time period or held in abeyance).  For the offices of President, Executive Vice President, Vice President for Student Organizations and Treasurer, an individual must have at least a cumulative 2.5 GPA, and have completed 24 total credits, and 12 credits at UMBC, to seek or hold office, and maintain at least a 2.5 semester GPA while in office.  Additionally, all Senators and Finance Board Representatives must adhere to the attendance requirements determined by their respective legislative body and as outlined in each respective body’s procedural rules to maintain eligibility.”
