Michelle Kuah for Finance Board Representative

What experience and qualifications do you have?

I am currently the President of UMBC Wushu and the Executive Head of the newly established UMBC Federation of Martial Arts. In addition, I also hold two on-campus jobs as a Desk Staffer in Harbor Hall and an IHU Peer Facilitator. I hope to use the decision-making, problem solving, teamwork, and emergency responsiveness skills gained from both my student leadership and employment positions in a collaborative manner that will benefit the Finance Board. I have also been provided with the opportunity to experience how finance board meetings operate. Throughout my attendance at these meetings, I have been able to become better acquainted with the various policies and procedures of both the Finance Board and SGA itself. As a senior this fall, I believe that I am qualified for this position due to my experience as a student organization leader and my passion for advancing the UMBC community.

What is your platform? What do you hope to accomplish if you win?

If elected Finance Board Representative, I hope to further the advancement of the UMBC community through the impartial division of financial resources to various student organizations. While many organizations may recognize the mere existence of the finance board, they may not understand its specific place and purpose in the student body. I hope to meet the various needs of each student organization and its members; working to fund an increased variety of student events and activities by providing all students with a larger range of opportunities. Another issue I hope to address is the gap that separates SGA organizations and sports clubs. As of now, sports clubs are maintained by the Athletics Department. There are only 24 organizations that are given “sports club” status, a number that is set mainly due to funding issues. I hope to establish closer ties between the two groups, addressing all areas of financial concern.

What I really want students to know about me is….

Students should know that I am a hard-working, goal-driven person who passionately believes in the importance of student involvement. I greatly enjoy working on a team and actively contributing to group discussion. I am described by my friends as having both an enthusiastic and ambitious personality; always open to hearing new ideas and collaborating with a wide variety of people. If elected to be on Finance Board, I will do my absolute best to fulfill the position and the responsibilities it encompasses.

Platform Summary:
  • To provide a larger range of student activity and event opportunities by funding a greater variety of student organizations.
  • To encourage an increased level of student involvement on a more consistent basis, both through event attendance and club membership.
  • To promote closer ties between SGA clubs and sports clubs (clubs maintained by the Athletics Department) so that all organizations may operate under a single, unified student body.
